February Newsletter 2024

I had a brilliant month silkscreen printing under the expert guidance of Gráinne Murphy at Creative Spark, Dundalk. It has really helped in my preparations for taking up my two month artist residency which starts tomorrow, 1st March.

CMYK Silkscreen Printing

So what did I get up to? I took one of my pieces, Celestial Body, and divided it up into its component colour channels in Photoshop, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK). It’s a fiddly process, but ultimately I ended up with four individual halftone screens for my cyan, magenta, yellow and inks.

The finished silkscreen print is made by layering the ink in order from lightest to darkest colours (yellow, magenta, cyan and black) using registrations marks to help line up (or purposefully unline up) the layers of ink. The end result is a beautiful, hand-printed artwork which displays the halftone process in all its glory.

So I now have five signed editions of my hand printed piece, Celestial Body, which I’m planning to sell directly through my website when I set up the shop feature in the coming weeks.

Creative Spark Residency Starting Tomorrow

I hope you’re ready for all the extra content I’ll be sharing on my social media over the coming months from my little studio in Dundalk. I’m hoping to connect with curators too during my time at Creative Spark to develop exhibition opportunities in the future. There’s a lovely meeting area with refreshments so that’s where you’ll find me for a chat!
