Sacred Cyanotypes

Why it Matters

I made cotton rags for the sacred tree beside Brigid’s Well, Faughart. Before I tied them to the tree on the eve of St. Brigid’s Day, I coated the fabric with cyanotype solution.

Overnight the moonlight exposed the shapes of the leaves onto the rags, the morning dew on the 1st February, added to the patterns. I fixed the cyanotypes with holy water collected from the shrine to complete the process.

It matters because the whole process is low toxic and all the elements can be safely returned to the earth.
