Statement of Ethics
I am driven by a passion for creating meaningful images through photography. Photography, for me, is both an art and a form of storytelling; a way of staying with the trouble. I seek to honour the craft and the subjects I capture by approaching my work through a lens of ecological conscious, care, respect and sustainability.
Core Ethical Principles and Actions:
Respect for Dignity
Definition: To me, dignity means honouring the humanity and individuality of every subject I photograph, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Actions: I will always seek informed consent, represent subjects truthfully without exploitation, and avoid images that could harm their reputation or privacy.Authenticity and Integrity
Definition: Authenticity means presenting images that reflect the genuine moment or emotion, without misleading manipulation. Integrity involves honesty in how I capture and share my work.
Actions: I will use darkroom techniques to enhance the artistic quality of my prints without altering the truth of the scene. I will disclose any significant alterations when sharing my work.Continuous Learning and Reflection
Definition: Ethical photography requires ongoing self-reflection and growth to remain sensitive to evolving sustainable processes.
Actions: I commit to regularly reflecting on my practice, learning from other photographers, and adapting my approach to better serve my subjects and audience.
Inspirations and Aspirations:
I admire photographers who combine technical mastery with deep empathy, such as those who document human stories with respect and nuance; Brooke Shaden, Hannah Fletcher, Melanie King, Chloë Tibet’s, John Newling, I will continually add to this list as I learn more.
